Dexter Spoilers, news, trivias and more about stars.
If ever there was a truly captivating show on Television, it has really got to be Showtime’s Dexter. Based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay and adapted for television by Emmy Award-winning screenwriter James Manos, Jr., the show centers around Dexter Morgan, aptly played by Michael C. Hall, whose a serial killer governed by a strict moral code which mandates him to work for the Miami Metro Police Department as a blood spatter analyst.

The show has already run for 4 seasons . The series premiered on the premium cable network Showtime on October 1, 2006. Dexter has received considerable critical acclaim and has won two Emmys in technical categories, and has also generated public controversies concerning its content and promotion.
If you ask me what draws me towards the show, it is the seemingly split personality of Dexter. On one hand, by working with and for the Miami Police Department, he is performing a commendable service to society, and at the same time, he continues to be a menace to society, as a murderer. But if you look deeper and see the profiles of those whom Dexter kills, he comes across as a savior in this respect as well; after all, it is only those who are a menace to society, who are his victims. Dexter does not murder common, innocent people. He only murders perpetrators like other serial killers, child molesters, and mob assassins and by doing so, is in fact doing us all a favor, and actually saving the lives of many others whom these perpetrators could have tormented in numerous ways.
A very strong reason for my admiration for the show comes from the appropriateness of the actor playing the primary character, i.e. Michael C. Hall. I somehow feel that no one else could have ever done justice to the role the way Michael does. It seems as though he is naturally tailor-made for the role, and in addition has taken significant strides to ensure that he gets into the skin of the character. Other actors on the show have also been doing a wonderful job. Be it Julie Benz as Rita Bennett, Dexter’s female interest, or Jennifer Carpenter as Debra Morgan, Dexter’s insecure cop sister, or even Erik King as Sergeant Doakes, a bad-tempered cop on the force who suspects there’s much more than what meets the eye concerning Dexter, all of them carry out their roles with complete aplomb.
Now, as much as I admire the show, there are times when I am not able to see it, most often for reasons way beyond my control. Under any of these circumstances, whenever I missed Dexter, it was almost like the smoker’s withdrawal symptom wherein I really had pangs for the show and simply yearned for it!

Dexter has stirred quite a controversy as its story arc has seemed to follow an incestuous romance between its characters Dexter and Deb, which were portrayed by Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter respectively.

However, the president of the Showtime channel, David Nevins, was quick to defend the drama series. According to him, the brewing Dexter and Deb romantic team-up was already in the offing. Although Deb plays the role of an adoptive sister, thus making her biologically unrelated to Dexter, Nevins understood the “certain taboo” that viewers and critics subscribe to. But he pointed that it was “something that has been building over a number of years.”
During the Television Critics Association’s (TCA) press tour, Nevins further asserted that Deb’s unraveling of Dexter’s dark side in the season finale was necessary as a “trajectory for the next two seasons”.
“There should be a fundamentally different dynamic now that Deb [knows about Dexter] and it’s going to ricochet,” Nevins added.
The crime-drama series has been renewed for a couple of seasons more and the Showtime head revealed that the 8th season might be the series finale. But much emphasis was put on “might” as there’s a chance for Dexter to extend.
